Compare the frequency of the wave source with the frequency measured by the observer.

It may be useful if you compare the number of wave-crests emitted by the source with the number of wave-crests going through the point of observation.

The number of wave-crests setting out from the wave source in 1 second gives the frequency of the wave source.
