In the picture you can see the incoming wave and the wave which is reflected on the free end, both having identical phases. As a result of their interference, a standing wave is created along the rope.

For similar reasons as in the case of fixed ends, at the free reflecting end and at half wavelength distances from here in the “D” points, there are antinodes, and between them exactly in the middle, in the “C” points, there are nodes.
